The Two Main Types Of Cat 5 Connector
A Cat 5 Connector is a special type of connector used for Cat5e twisted wire cable. There are several types of connectors used with different specifications depending on what your Cat5E cable is being used for. I will give a brief overview of the different types of connectors and their purpose along with a few places where you can find them. This is by no means a comprehensive list but it will give you a good overview of what connectors are, what purpose they serve, where you can find them and how much they will cost you.
The first type of Cat 5 Connector you will find is something called a Keystone Jack. It is a female connector used more with data communication such as LANs or Ethernet connections. You will usually find a Keystone Jack mounted in a wall panel. The matching component to the Keystone Jack is called a Keystone Plug and is usually attached to the other end of your Cat5e cable. The Keystone connectors are considered to be the most versatile because they come in shielded and unshielded and can accommodate a large number of conductors.
QuickTrex is considered one of the most reliable manufacturers of Cat 5 Connectors and several online retailers carry this brand. You can purchase a Keystone Jack from LANshack.com for $4.33 a piece. You can also purchase the Keystone couples from the same store, in various colors, for $4.76 a piece.

The second type of Cat 5 Connector available is called a Modular Plug connector also known as the RJ45 (registered jack 45) Modular Connector. Although, there is some naming confusion with these plugs in the telecommunications industry RJ45 is the most acceptable term to use for this type off connector. This type of Cat 5 Connector are typically used in Ethernet cables. These connectors use a standard that is commonly used in telecommunications and so they would be exclusively used in Ethernet connections. Unlike they Keystone Jack mentioned earlier, the modular connector is usually sold in large batches of 100 or 500. You can purchase them from places like LANshack.com for $33.95 per bag of 100 connectors. |
